This working paper synthesizes evidence from a systematic review of India’s landscape restoration initiatives to provide a clear picture of how restoration contributes to national climate goals. The review identifies at least 61 restoration interventions that have been implemented or studied across the country, with agroforestry and afforestation/reforestation emerging as the most common approaches. These interventions demonstrate significant potential for both climate mitigation and adaptation. By consolidating insights from India’s diverse restoration experience, the paper offers a structured understanding of what is working, where, and why. It aims to inform policymakers, practitioners, financial institutions, and civil society as they design and scale restoration strategies that are effective, context-responsive, and aligned with India’s broader development priorities.
